He is currently Independent Director and Member of the Fiscal Council of Marisa Lojas S.A., a director of Jereissati Group (Oi Telecom, Shoppings Iguatemi) and Reciclar (a social project for 150 adolescents in the slums of Sao Paolo). He is also a Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley Brazil and a member of the Advisory Board of Principal Financial Group (USA).

On 3rd of May 2008, over 50 000 Estonians cleaned up thousands of illegal trashpiles all around their country, in just five hours. About 10 000 tons of garbage was collected, packed and sorted, making it the largest coordinated civic event in the country since the singing revolution.

The coordination of the clean-up day, led by Rainer Nõlvak, was a 7-month teambuilding challenge of growing the volunteer management team from a few people to the over 600 coordinators needed to handle the challenges faced by such an unprecedented public effort.

The story on Estonians spread rapidly around the world and has gathered followers ever since. National clean-up days in Latvia, Lithuania, Romania and Portugal all attracted over 100 000 participants. Slovenian Cleanup saw another level of civic participation: over 270 thousand volunteers took place in massive cleanup action, over 13% of country?s population, and citizen-run garbage map was created to further monitor the illegal dumpsites. Clean-up days are currently being prepared in Russia, Brasil, in capital of India and elsewhere.

Europe went through a period of intense growth over the 20th century - its population grew four times and its economic output grew 40 times. This process has been highly resource-intensive: the use of fossil fuels increased 16 times, fishing catches 35 times, water 9 times and carbon emission 17 times.

The clip offered shows how Denby Pottery, a British company selling tableware in 30 countries, found a way to run its business in a more sustainable and less resource-intensive way. Denby has put into place an innovative recycling process so its pottery waste is no longer sent to landfill. Instead it is processed through a special machine, which crushes it into small pieces so that it can be reused as raw material.

The European Commission stressed the need for more attention to be dedicated to wiser resource use in a ‘Flagship Initiative' under the Europe 2020 Strategy. The document sets out the Commission's views on a strategic framework for a more “sustainable use of natural resources and a shift towards resource-efficient, low-carbon growth in Europe”.

For millions of Europeans, the beach is the ultimate holiday destination. That is, except when it is covered with a layer of rotting green slime, giving off lethal fumes that have killed domestic animals and caused serious poisoning in humans.

So-called 'green tides' of algae, which disfigure some of Europe's most beautiful beaches, are a clear indicator of nitrate pollution. This problem is often particularly severe during the summer months. The film illustrates the underlying causes of nitrate pollution and the strategies that have been put in place to tackle the problem, whose origins lie in the agricultural sector. Many actions have been implemented in large part thanks to the EU's Nitrates Directive that aims to protect water quality across Europe.

The directive aims to encourage activities directed at preventing nitrates from agricultural sources polluting ground and surface waters and to promote the use of good farming practices.

By exploring the ins and outs of the development of market instruments (IM) for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, the international conference organized by the Foundation Hermès and IDDRI comes with these objectives:
- Clarify the concept of IM and of the implicit principles in a context where terminology and definition remain unclear and changing, and where their links with economic theory are far from clear;
- Present an overview of IM designed and used for the conservation of biodiversity and the implementation of ecosystem services at different geographical scales;
- Evaluate the relevance of IM as effective methods of intervention, their legitimacy in terms of public policy instruments and their implications for equity;
- Study and analyze the integration of IM into public policies, including exploring the reality of the transfer decision and funding of the public sphere into the private sphere;
- Discuss the latest and controversial IM to determine the risks in the short to medium term and the long-term prospects;
- Discuss on various scenarios for the future.

One of the major arguments in favor of market instruments is the assumption that these instruments would be more effective than traditional prescriptive or coercive intervention. But the theory does not always materialize and evidence regarding the actual earnings will be discussed during this session. Another argument explaining their emergence refers to the fact that they represent an additional source of funding for environmental management. Ultimately, these arguments could be used to promote new potentially controversial market instruments.

China's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) set a target to reduce energy intensity by 20% from 2005 levels. Indeed, on March 5, China released the outline of its 12th FYP, setting new targets for energy intensity (16% reduction from 2010 levels) and carbon intensity (17% reduction from 2010 levels). The public is concerned about climate change. However, there is clearly a reluctance amongst the majority of the population to make significant changes to their lifestyles and everyday practices – what we as psychologists call the value-action gap. How do we explain this? This talk will examine the way in which both the public and governments seek to dislocate the causes of climate change - whether it is individual attitudes or government policies - from the local, to the national and to the global, and from the present to the future. And this lecture also intends to question one of the principal strategies employed by the government to address our unsustainable ways of life – behaviour change - a strategy which very much draws on the work of psychologists.

Behaviour change is clearly important – we all have a responsibility as individuals to change our lifestyles, but what I question is whether it can deliver the kind of changes needed at the scale required. Changing the conditions which encourage and drive our behaviours may be more effective. We need to tackle the societal structures and processes that promote and reinforce identity desires, values, images and inequalities if we are serious about changing unsustainable consumer practices. The last part of the talk will discuss two case studies which illustrate the challenges facing us if we are to meet the 2020 and 2050 carbon emission targets, but also how psychology can make a positive and important contribution to this task.

All believe that international environmental problems will be better addressed with systematic scientific involvement. This paper (Organized science, usable knowledge and multilateral environmental governance) looksat the various ways in which science is likely to be consulted, and, through an empirical review of existing international scientific advisory arrangements to international environmental regimes, seeks to identify some lessons about the appropriate design and maintenance of such scientific bodies. It addresses arguments about the autonomy of science from politics, reviews the empirical record of institutional design for international environmental science advice, and infers some lessons about institutional design and practices for informed scientific management in international relations (IR). Some policy implications for IPCC and IPBES follow, as well as for global governance writ large.

In Europe today, most citizens do not have to worry where their next meal will come from. In the rest of the world and in developing countries in particular, the situation is naturally very different. The European Union seeks to help these countries and eradicate hunger worldwide with the Food and Agriculture Organization.

EU Food Facility is the EU rapid response to soaring food prices in developing countries. The 1 billion Food Facility was adopted in December 2008 and provides assistance to countries most affected by the crisis over a three-year period 2009-2011.

This report gives us a glimpse of the help brings to Zambia, Bangladesh and Guatemala.

One Tonne Life” is a project in which A-hus, Vattenfall, Volvo Cars and other partners will create a climate-smart household. A selected couple with young children will try to meet the low carbon dioxide target yet at the same time live a normal life. They will be helped in a variety of ways, not least with a climate-smart house featuring solar cells on the roof that are used to recharge the electric car parked in the driveway.

Experts from the Chalmers University of Technology with take part in the project in order to ensure a reliable calculation of the family's carbon dioxide emissions.

The house is already being built in Hässelby Villastad in Stockholm and at the same time another two demonstration houses are being constructed – a neighbour for the family home and one in Göteborg. In Stockholm they provide added spice to the Swedish capital's role as Green Capital of Europe 2010. Environmental experts from the city of Stockholm will help calculating and evaluating the family's carbon footprint together with Chalmers.

Cities and local governments need to get ready, reduce the risks and become resilient to disasters. For the next two years and beyond, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) will campaign together with its partners for this to happen.

The 2010-2011 World Disaster Reduction Campaign 'Making Cities Resilient' addresses issues of local governance and urban risk while drawing upon previous ISDR Campaigns on safer schools and hospitals, as well as on the sustainable urbanizations principles developed in the UN-Habitat World Urban Campaign 2009-2013.

Climate change affects all countries but not with the same intensity. Poorer areas of the world are among the most vulnerable. In most countries of the developing world, climate change threatens to destroy development efforts and make living conditions impossible.   Together with local authorities, NGOs and other international institutions, the EU provides assistance and funding for territorial adaptations and disaster preparedness. On the Asia peninsula, the Mekong River and Delta provides the breadbasket of the region but is also one of the most vulnerable regions in terms of climate change. Floods, drought and deforestation are some of the problems facing this region. 70 million inhabitants, who depend directly on the river, are facing risks of displacement, food insecurity, increased poverty and even international tensions.

Commissioned by EU Environment Ministers in 2007, the TEEB report will demonstrate the concrete benefits of ecological awareness in the political, economic and social fields. This new awareness of the need to protect ecosystems and the services they provide will serve the long-term economic and ecological interests of society as a whole. For the world as a whole, the loss of natural areas over the period 2000 to 2050 is projected to be 7.5 million square kilometres, i.e. the size of Australia. Fourteen million jobs depend on the transatlantic relationship which accounts for forty per cent of world trade. Leaders on both sides of the Atlantic are recognizing how investing in clean energy industry can create jobs while at the same time reducing greenhouse gases. In an interview ahead of the summit, President Barroso says the relationship is important not just in economic terms but also for the future of our planet. Heís urged the US Senate to follow the climate change initiatives taken by the Obama administration.

Profound changes are about to affect the mechanisms supporting life on earth, and their impact in the next few decades will be considerable. Europe will not escape. In July 2009 the Commission published a report on the conservation status of over 1000 species and 200 habitat types that are protected by EU law. The European Union has set itself the goal of raising the share of renewable energy sources in the final overall energy consumption of the Union from 8.5% in 2005 to 20% in 2020. This is an ambitious objective, but it is also a necessary contribution to the global fight against climate change and towards better control over our energy dependence. Governments have a crucial role to play through their good example and their support. But each individual can also help to achieve this objective. The various uses for renewable energy sources are examined: electricity for wind and hydraulic energies; electricity or heat for geothermal and solar energies; multiple applications: electricity, heat, and biofuel for biomass, the "Sleeping Giant". The European Union is a world leader in the use and deployment of technologies that exploit renewable energy sources, and it intends to remain so.

The industry, pushed by the European Commission, has invested in products able to provide a high performance while reducing the environmental impact. The video also shows how to choose performing domestic appliances that can offer considerable savings on electricity bills. We will also see representatives from European domestic appliance makers speak in the video about the industry's efforts in putting in the market more energy efficient products. Me, I am a Pied Flycatcher and I like travelling, discovering other horizons. I like to spend the winter in Africa. But when spring arrives, I fly back to Europe. I like Europe and its beautiful forests of broad-leaved trees. People put up nesting boxes to protect me from stone martens. The forests are teeming with my favourite food: flies of course, but also beetles and caterpillars. Because of climate change, I have a big problem. Butterfly eggs hatch earlier than before, so that when I have to feed my young, the caterpillars have already become butterflies. Some chicks die and others are unable to make the trip to Africa. This is my universe: the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, multicoloured fish and the wealth of the sea bottom, between Africa and Madagascar, along the coral reefs. Regrettably, the corals are sick and I, the dolphin, I am the first to see it. I see them going pale and dying bit by bit. Maybe you don’t know it, but corals are animals, which form reefs by clustering together, in colonies. But reef corals are fragile, they need a constant temperature. The increase in temperatures predicted for this century may well seal their doom. The coral reefs that we so need for our living environment are at risk of disappearing. For us, it is more than time. I spend most of my time here, in the trees of the Indonesian forest, on the island of Borneo. I am an Orang-utan, my name comes from Malay and means "man of the forest ". I am afraid that my living space is more than ever in danger today. There are already many threats, but climate change isn’t helping. The drought sometimes lasts for several years and forest fires become catastrophic. If it goes on like this, my trees will become scarce and then where will I live? Recently, an area of forests and peat bogs as big as half of Poland went up in smoke. The trees die, and we suffocate. Man's health is also in danger. For us, it is more than time. The ice of the Arctic is my living space. Me, the ringed seal, I am a bit like a fluffy toy that you want to hold in your arms. I am the smallest of the seals. I share this white and majestic world with other species, such as the bearded seal here. I was born in a den, which my parents dug in the ice pack. The problem is climate warming which is making the ice pack and glaciers melt. Consequently, baby seals slide sooner and sooner from their dens to the icy water and find themselves left on their own much too soon. Some of them don’t make it and die. The new directive on the assessment and management of floods aims to counter the growing threat from floods and minimise their damaging impacts on people, the environment, infrastructure and property. It focuses on long-term prevention, protection and preparedness. The VNR focuses on the Danube, Europe's largest river basin in Europe. Between Vienna and Bratislava the risk of flooding has been reduced by allowing the river to reclaim the wet forests along the Danube National Park, upstream from the Slovak capital. Not only are the two cities now better protected from flooding but nature and tourism in the region are also flourishing.

I am a snow leopard, a big cat from the high mountains in Central Asia. My white, spotted fur is very valuable and poachers still hunt me. So I hide. In winter I live alone in the Himalayan forests and in the summer I go up to the meadows at heights of up to 6000 m. From here, I can see how fast the glaciers are melting due to global warming. These glaciers form a huge reservoir of water. They supply countless rivers, which are essential to the lives of half a billion people. Here in Belgium, these swamps are called peat bogs. It’s only here, in these very particular habitats, that you can come across me, the dragonfly, answering also to the strange name ‘Leucorrhinia dubia’. We dragonflies have existed for millions of years, but today I feel threatened. Human beings do not stop spreading their hold, reclaiming peat bogs, thinning out our living space. Global warming is an additional threat for our habitats, which are already so fragile. If there is no other favourable site in the neighbourhood, then what will happen to this flora and fauna? Global warming is happening. Temperatures have already risen by 0.76 degrees since the industrial revolution and are projected to rise further by 1.8 - 4 degrees by the end of the century. The last time climate change happened at this pace was 125,000 years ago and led to a 4-6 metre sea level rise. Global warming at the upper end of the scale predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change would have catastrophic consequences for Europe. Up to 30% of plant, animal and bird species would be wiped out and the threat of natural disasters such as landslides, floods and mudslides would increase significantly.

Hello, I am a Puffin. My favourite place is the north Atlantic: Iceland, Scotland, Scandinavia, and Brittany. An excellent fisherman, I spend a lot of time at sea, I dive to catch fish and molluscs. I can carry up to 50 fish in my beak at the same time. The problem is that climate change is beginning to have a serious impact on my everyday diet. Small fishes are less and less numerous because they are going further up North. I’m an orca. I belong to the same family as the dolphin. Here, in the open seas around Norway, we live in groups. Our fishing technique is second to none – deadly even for migratory fish. As long as there are fish around… There are several factors at play, but global warming certainly isn’t helping: the food pyramid is out of balance. Plankton, which can’t cope with rising sea temperatures, is getting scarcer and moving further north. The herrings that feed on plankton have had to follow, and are changing their normal migratory paths. And we orcas will have to follow too, willy or nilly. For us, it is more than time. Like the penguins, we Weddell seals live along the Antarctic Peninsula. There are 800,000 of us today in the icy waters of the southern hemisphere, and we’re champion divers: up to 700 metres deep ! Life would be even better if it weren’t for this awful global warming thing, which is really noticeable in the polar regions. The Antarctic Ocean is heating up, especially at the surface of course. The entire ecosystem is readjusting, and that’s upset the whole food chain: less plankton means fewer fish, fewer molluscs, and that means we have less food. For us, it is more than time. This is the story of a little freshwater turtle called a European pond turtle - me in fact. I used to live peacefully in the ponds, marshes, and lakes all around Europe, like here in the middle of France. I live for a long time, sometimes up to 100 years! But my life changed the day that "monster" appeared... the red-eared slider, an American cousin recognisable by its red cheeks. I don't know how it got here from the bottom of an American, but anyway, as the climate has warmed up, it is breeding more and has successfully made itself at home here. 42% of Europe's native mammals are threatened with extinction, 43% of birds, 45% of butterflies, 52% of freshwater fish. The list goes on and makes terrifying reading. Worldwide, the loss of species is even more alarming. These species form part of the Earth's biological diversity, or biodiversity - the complex but fragile web of life on which we all depend for essential goods like food and medecines as well as for vital 'services' such as regulating the climate and providing clean air and water. On 22 May 2006, the European Commission is launching an Action Plan aimed at ensuring that the European Union meets its commitment to halt the loss of biodiversity in Europe by 2010. This target is still achievable if action is greatly speeded up. Much of the damage to our ecosystems is happening as a result of human activity such as inappropriate land use and development. So how can Europe develop its economy while conserving its biodiversity? A Video News Release is being made available which shows a living example of how these two goals can be met at the same time. It focuses on a major industrial development - the expansion of the French port of Le Havre. The one billion euro extension to France's biggest container port destroyed important breeding grounds for birds and was going to have a huge impact on the Seine estuary - a protected natural area. The film charts the remarkable relationship which developed between the port and environmental groups as nearly 50 million euro was spent to build a new resting island for seabirds, restore important mudflats in the Seine estuary and create a new "ecological" beach. Port managers from Le Havre and the Maison de l'Estuaire environmental group explain the project, and the video also includes interviews with EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas and Tony Long, European policy director of WWF.

Here, in the Ganges delta, everything is immense. Me, the Bengal tiger, I like striding around this region made of land and water. It is my territor. I am a solitary animal and I need a lot of room to hunt my prey. On the menu: deer, wild boar, monkeys, and lizards. I know these mangrove swamp forests by heart, with their roots diving into the salt water. But now I am worried; the landscape is changing, islands are disappearing in this big delta, all this because of the rising sea levels, caused by climate change. 10,000 km2 that are at risk of being partially submerged ! I was born here, in Malaysia, on this beach at the edge of the Indian Ocean. When the egglaying season arrives I come back, and my descendants will do the same. They call me the green turtle. I live in warm seas, near coral reefs. For many years, we sea turtles have been the victims of fishing nets, pollution, and the theft of our eggs. We are hunted for our meat and our shells. But today there’s another threat hanging over our shells. With global warming, the sea level is rising. Some islands are now under water, and our egg-laying sites are getting narrower and narrower, reduced to a thin strip of sand, which risks disappearing altogether. For us, it is more than time. No, I don’t sleep all the time, as you can see for yourself! But I am shy… and careful. We marmots are always on the lookout. Eagles and foxes are never far away, so at the slightest sign of danger we whistle to warn each other. Here in the Alpine massif, I live in the upper limits of the forest. I feast on meadow grass, along with the occasional spider or two and a few worms – delicious ! The trouble is, things are changing round here with the rising temperatures: the forests are growing at higher altitudes, my beloved meadows are shrinking, and I will soon have less and less grass to eat. I’m the leatherback turtle. I am the biggest and the heaviest of marine turtles. I can weigh up to a ton. Impressive, no ? I spend all my life at sea, like here in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Mexico. However, several times a year, Mrs Turtle comes onto the sand. Not to sunbathe, mind you, but to perpetuate the species. In turtles, as in all the reptiles, the sex of the embryo depends on the ambient temperature during the incubation of the egg ! And if global warming goes on unabated, pretty soon there could be a lot more female hatchlings than males, which won’t help anybody. For us, it is more than time. Excuse me! Sorry, I’m busy right now… just a little peck and I’ll be with you! Hello! Let me introduce myself: I’m an oystercatcher. As you can see, there are plenty of us here on the Netherlands coast. For generations we have fed on mussels and other molluscs, just like this. There we go! Ah! It’s a real skill ! But… my lifestyle could change… With this disrupted climate, the acidity of the sea has increased on the surface, because of these infamous greenhouse gases. As a result, making a seashell is getting harder. This could cause real problems for all shellfish, and for my mussels! What a mess ! For us, it is more than time. What a beautiful forest. Allow me to introduce myself. I am a wood warbler, a migratory bird. In the autumn, I go to Africa, and in the spring, I come back here to nest. Ah, the great forests! The hills covered by old oaks, the forests of huge beeches, the undergrowth, the ground covered with a humus of dead leaves, aaah! I’m very particular about my habitat. I’ve tried a pine forest, but it definitely wasn’t for me ! And that’s the problem. With the temperatures going up, the beech groves are dying. It starts with the twigs, then the branches, and in a few years the trees are dead. For us, it is more than time. Here in Spitsbergen, hardly anything grows, and everything is white, cold, icy. But if only you knew how I love my country, far from humans ! I feel strong, mighty carnivore that I am. I can run faster than you can and I can swim much better than you can ! But there is one thing against which I am completely powerless, and that’s global warming ! I can hardly recognise the landscape around here. I watch my sea ice getting a bit smaller every year. My preys – the seals, for example – also need the sea ice to live. Hi! I’m the Arctic fox. This grey-brown coat is my summer outfit. In winter, my fur will turn white so that I can blend in with the snowy landscapes in the Arctic regions. It’s handy for hunting! I love the cold. I can withstand freezing temperatures! What’s my favourite food ? Small rodents. The trouble is, it’s also my cousin’s favourite food. He’s a red fox, and he’s bigger and stronger than I am. With global warming, he’s been able to move further north, and little by little, he’s invading my territory. He’s not very keen on sharing, so I’m starting to feel threatened around here. For us, it is more than time. Catastrophes can be natural, like the South Asia Tsunami that left over 300 000 people dead in 2004, or they can be man made, like the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah fighters, which caused huge suffering and damage, particularly in Lebanon. This detailed news report looks at the global support mechanisms put in place by the European Union to respond to man-made and natural disasters. Launch of a new European anti-air pollution strategy The European Commission wants to reduce air pollution more in Europe. Although the situation has improved substantially over the last few decades, there are still significant areas of concern with regard to certain pollutants that are particularly harmful to human health (respiratory diseases) and damaging to the environment (acidification, eutrophication, etc.). The anti-pollution programme that the Commission is presenting today is the result of the “Clean Air for Europe” or CAFE programme that it launched in May 2001. Formation and impact of particles in the cross- channel region The story told in this film is that of a huge study carried out between 2002 and 2005 on air pollution in the cross-Channel area covering Nord-Pas de Calais, Sussex and Kent. Coordinated by the Université du Littoral of Boulogne-sur-Mer as part of the European Interreg III programme, its main objective is to identify the sources and impact of air pollution in the region. One of the lessons drawn from this study is that it established the seriousness of the impact of particles on human health, particularly of those particles that show a volatile organic compound deposit characteristic of emissions caused by the petrochemical industry and by car transport in Dunkirk and its suburbs. Barcelona, city of sun and sustainable energy Everywhere in Europe, energy consumption increases, yet our supply of fossil fuels will not last forever and we need to find sustainable solutions. Several European cities have focused on renewable energies and have developed global concepts of sustainability. One of these, Barcelona has a unique regulation in the area of solar energy: the "Solar Ordinance". This decrees that all new buildings should use thermal solar energy for their hot water use. But that's not all. Everywhere around the city, the municipality promotes photovoltaic energy, a technology which allows the generation of electricity through the conversion of sunshine. Thanks to a collective political ambition, this Catalan capital is achieving a far more rational use of energy. This kind of initiatives is supported by different programmes of the European Commission, including the Campaign for an Energy Sustainable Europe 2005-2008. This Campaign will give a strong signal to political opinion makers, to private and public investors as well as to European citizens: to invest in renewable energies. On July 16th 2008, the European Commission will launch the Sustainable Consumption and Production package, which will include a legislative proposal and an Action Plan for sustainable development. The stakes are high, because if we do not change our means of consumption and production, in forty years time we will need double of the Earth's surface to be able to take in all our waste and CO2. We urgently need to reduce out environmental impact and consume in a more sustainable way. Changing consumption and production modes is one of the core objectives of sustainable development. Accelerated growth in Europeans' consumption habits is putting ever greater pressure on the environment. Transport, housing, food and beverages account for around 80% of man's impact on the environment, including both waste and CO2 emissions. Our behaviour as consumers is therefore a key factor in reducing our environmental impact: opting for a particular product, service or way of life can reduce the damage we do to the environment. Evaluation and improvement of a product's environmental impact requires a review of its entire life cycle, i.e. every link in the chain from design to production, consumption and disposal. Sustainable consumption and production imply goods and services that are better for the environment, either because they require fewer resources, produce less waste or lower emissions levels, or because they consume less energy during use. But beyond production, it is equally important for such products to be correctly labelled so that consumers can make an informed choice. 'The legislative package on sustainable production and consumption will include a set of proposals plus additional measures', explains Timo Mäkelä of the European Commission's DG Environment. 'These measures will focus on improving products placed on the market, making them more "sustainable". (…) The role of the retail sector is essential. Retailers need to be certain that all the products they place on their shelves can be clearly identified by consumers. And that's why the European Ecolabel system is so important...' Ecolabel, an independent European body, authorises the use of its logo for a whole range of products and services that contribute to environmental sustainability. By choosing these products, consumers can decrease their ecological footprint and encourage manufacturers to 'green' their production for the benefit of the environment. In November 2005, at the summit to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Euro-Mediterranean process in November 2005, the Euro-Mediterranean partners committed to "endorse a feasible timetable to de-pollute the Mediterranean Sea by 2020, while providing appropriate financial resources and technical support to implement it, using the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development and exploring possible areas for co-operation in this regard with UNEP". Following-up on this commitment, the European Commission launched the Horizon 2020 initiative that aims to tackle the top sources of Mediterranean pollution by the year 2020. The Commission is building a coalition of partners to implement it. This VNR presents two projects co-financed by the EU whose main objective is to help southern countries of the Mediterranean track their main pollution sources. It focuses on two examples: a recycling programme of domestic rubbish in Tunisia, and a sanitation project of urban used waters, in Morocco.
